Ida Tarbell Dinner
Have you ever wanted to go back in time? This is your opportunity! In 1939 Dr. Paul Giddens of Allegheny College published The Birth of the Oil Industry, the definitive book on oil history in Titusville and the surrounding area. The famous muckraker, Ida Tarbell, wrote the introduction, so the two of them were honored by the Titusville Historical Society in January of 1939 in Colestock Gymnasium. Three hundred guests came to celebrate the return of their favorite daughter. There was music by Major Olmes, dinner served by the YMCA, and speeches. In the spirit of OIL 150, Ida Tarbell, portrayed by Barbara Zolli, site administrator of Drake Well Museum, will join guests and admirers on July 23, 2009. The evening will begin with wine and cheese at 5:30 p.m. at U.P.T.’s McKinney Hall. Weather permitting, wine, donated by Angeli Winery, will be served on the garden patio at the back of McKinney Hall. In case of rain, this reception will be held in the lobby of Henne Auditorium. At 6:30 p.m. guests will proceed down Main Street to Miss Tarbell’s childhood home and then on to Colestock Gymnasium for dinner and speeches. Guests are invited to don attire from the 1930s and 1940s to join the spirit of the event. Dinner will feature a menu similar to that of the original, roast turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, creamed peas, tossed salad, and dessert. Dinner will be served on commemorative plates such as those produced for the Oil Centennial in 1959. Each guest will receive a commemorative plate to take as a memento of OIL 150. Ticket cost is $20.00 which includes the wine and cheese event, dinner, and the commemorative plate. These tickets are available at the Titusville Alumni Association, 827-1283, the Titusville Chamber of Commerce, or the OIL 150 retail store (formerly Victoria's) until July 17. Please join in the spirit of Ida, buy a ticket, and return to 1939 with us.
